My disc golf bag is pretty bare-bones. If something’s not an absolutely necessary item, I’m not bringing it with me – even during a tournament. One area in which I go overboard, though?
I’m who you’d label a “compulsive disc-dryer.”
Rain, shine or anything in-between, unless it’s an idiot-proof tap-in, I’m drying the disc I plan to use for my next shot. Dry discs lead to better grip and a cleaner release. When you take time to dry a disc, there’s one less excuse on which to blame a crap throw. Also, I’m mildly OCD …
So there’s that.
I’m certain others do this, so to claim I invented the two-towel method is a reach …
Still, here’s how it works:
- Towel No. 1 – This towel is for wiping away dirt – that’s it. For this, I use a dobby-weave towel. This is a towel with a textured surface. From sand and light dust to thick mud, I’ve found the small loops a dobby weave provides best extract dirt from the surface of a disc.
- Towel No. 2 – This towel is for wiping away moisture. Similarly, within my rotation, this is all it does. Here, I use an Innova DewFly towel. The towel’s soft, micro-suede fabric wicks away water without getting saturated by it after multiple uses. Sprinklers, rain droplets and morning dew are a DewFly’s dream – it’s the best towel in the game.
With each towel used for a specific purpose, there’s ZERO cross-contamination of substances.
Dirt + Water = Mud
The less mud you have on your towels, the better (and longer) they’ll perform.
Also, there’s a third towel in the mix …
Sorta.
I rock a Towch – and with pride, might I add. During a round, when insane mud rears its ugly (and sticky) head, I’ll use it to protect the longevity of the two workhorse towels in my bag. When called upon, the two extra discs my Towch totes are funneled into another pocket.
* Note: I use the Upper Park Shift. Stretchable pockets make this disc-transition a cinch.
The two-towel method works for me.
And if you compulsively dry discs, it might work for you, too.
Yes, this is me overthinking one of the simplest tasks in disc golf …
But I’m cool with it.
