My family would call me “cheap.” I feel the term “frugal” is better. I work hard to provide for my wife and kids. Leaving the lights on in every room isn’t how I want to spend our money.
This mentality has followed me to disc golf. When browsing my local shop, I start with the used bin. Online, it’s gift cards, clearance aisles and the “What’s On Sale?” page at Infinite Discs. If for some reason you haven’t bookmarked this link on your desktop, now’s the time to do it.
Fortunately, disc golf is an affordable sport.
However, there is one purchase for which I highly recommend NOT skimping …
The disc golf bag.
Cheap disc golf bags are complete and total trash. The worst of the lot are those $75 to $100 mondo backpacks which carry 25-plus discs – this is their main selling point. Listen, I don’t care what logo-patch graces the front of that thing, if it sounds too good to be true, it’s because it is.
I’ve been there; I’ve bought that.
Don’t you do the same.
The materials are cheap and flimsy-feeling. Within a month of use, scratches turn to tears and tears to holes. And while that process is well under way, the stitching begins to unravel.
And that’s just the bag itself. Don’t for one second think these things feel good on your spine. An oversized JanSport might’ve worked wonders for hauling around textbooks in middle school, but it’ll leave your back feeling like an Auntie Anne’s pretzel after 18 holes of sweaty disc golf.
This is a round-ruiner.
You know which bags are good. Save up to buy one. Not having to replace a crap bag will help. In the interim, borrow a buddy’s. You could also take to Play-It-Again Sports for a used option.
Ideally, this is the end goal:
- GRIPeq
- Pound Disc Golf
- Squatch Disc Golf
- Upper Park Disc Golf
Amongst others, of course.
Disc manufacturers can get you there, too. I’ve had success with Latitude 64 and Dynamic Discs in the past, but again – nothing dirt cheap. Clearly, this post isn’t meant to be a review of every disc golf bag on the market. Moreover, it’s an invitation to do your due diligence before buying.
You and I might disagree on lots, but trust me …
Buy a cheap bag, and you’ll regret it.
You can (literally) take that to the bank.

Editor’s Suggestions:
- The Innova Aviar3 is a pointless putter
- Disc golf: Subscription boxes are (almost) never worth it
- Gripe No. 43: The best disc golfer on the card endlessly complaining
