We’re only one episode in …
But let’s jump the gun and judge this book by its cover – or the first chapter, at least.
Initially, I had plans to watch the Disc Golf Network’s (DGN) season premier of “On Tour” on Halloween. My wife and twin, 18-month-old boys wanted to go trick-or-treating, instead.
No ragrets.
Still, moving forward this off-season, you’ve got to get your disc-golf fix. The DGN’s pair of wrap-around events should help. JomezPro’s bound to do something with “The Putting Game” again. But if you’re going to keep paying for a DGN subscription when there’s no immediate tournament coverage on the docket, you’ve got to know if this kind of content is worth it.
THAT is the purpose of this post …
To let you know if “On Tour” is worthy of your time – and money.
Produced by the DGN, “On Tour” is a six-part, documentary-style series. Each episode is 50-ish minutes with a new installment dropping every Monday from Hallowen to the fifth of December. Also, celebrity chef, restaurateur and disc golfer, Andrew Zimmerman, narrates this bad boy …
That’s pretty cool.
Here are the nuts-and-bolts of the first episode:
- Part No. 1 – There’s a brief recap of the 2022 DGPT All-Star Weekend.
- Part No. 2 – There’s a more detailed recap of the 2022 Las Vegas Challenge.
I was “meh” on all this …
I write about the Pro Tour every day – I didn’t need it.
Here’s what I DID love, though …
The first episode started with a quick telling of the stories of James Conrad and Kona Panis. Coming off “The Holy Shot,” how would Conrad’s 2022 season unfold – boom or bust? And given Dynamic Discs’ faith in the future of Panis’ game, how would she handle the pressure?
You and I have the benefit of hindsight …
One of those is must-see material.
But “On Tour” isn’t going to be a season-long chronicle of Panis-induced cringe. Naturally, with so many unique characters within the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT), tons of players will get their time in the spotlight. Which brings me to the actual value of a series like this one …
Behind-the-scenes footage.
In the first episode alone, I saw Colten Montgomery crawling out of bed. I saw Kevin Jones and Luke Humphries playing catch in a parking lot. I even saw a topless Calvin Heimburg swimming in a lake. As stupid as it sounds, the day-to-day lives of touring pros is what makes “On Tour.”
Round recaps are for UDisc.
So, will I keep watching this thing?
No doubt.
Most everything the DGN puts out these days is top-shelf. “On Tour” hardly beats Elite-Series coverage, but I don’t think anybody at DGN intends for it to – live disc golf is their jam.
Listen, I have a fairly strong network within professional disc golf …
That said, the footage captured for “On Tour” is something to which I have ZERO access. For that reason alone, I’ll keep watching – and you should, too. If you don’t have a DGN subscription, get one – or, keep the one you’ve got. February is a long way away …
“On Tour” can help keep you sane.
