I don’t get Halloween.
I never have.
Sure, for the first few years of my life, October 31 was a good time – all kicks and giggles.
What’s not to love?
- Pumpkin Spice
- Cheap Costumes
- Hidden Razor Blades (Jokes)
And, of course …
Mountains of candy.
But by the time I’d hit eight-ish years of age, I couldn’t help but feel I was perhaps just a bit too old for the festivities. And again, I was only eight and some change. This I remember: My final, self-imposed year of trick-or-treating came at age 10. As of the penning of this post, I’m 34.
As you can imagine, instead of a fist-full of candy, should some pimple-faced high-schooler show up at my doorstep with a girl on his arm, a car parked in front of my house and a half-empty pillowcase, he’s met with an eye-roll, as well as a gently closed door.
I don’t like Halloween.
That’s fine.
Maybe you do; maybe you don’t.
But you know who does love it?
Disc golf.
Disc manufacturers, to be more specific.
Without fail, every October, Innova chooses a few select molds to get the “jack-o’-lantern” treatment. People lose their minds. And they pay more than they should for them, because of it.
Discraft can’t help but get in on the action, too. Year after year, come the season of ghosts and ghouls, the Wixom-based brand pumps out a ton of horror-themed SuperColor Buzzzes worthy of the “Adult Supervision Required” label. Courtesy of long-time plastic artist, Brian Allen, you’ll find blood, hatchets, cursed dolls, creepy clowns, scantily-clad damsels in distress …
And whatever the heck this thing is:
Why you gotta do Woody like that?
Eat your heart out, sickos.
Do you need any of these freaky fliers?
No.
Your bag won’t be any better off with them. However, assuming you can resist the temptation to pull the trigger on one (or five), you’ll be far less likely to rock a costume during a full-blown, PDGA-sanctioned event this October. And yes, this actually happened in real life …
This is Joel Freeman back in 2021:
WAY too much holiday spirit, Joseph.
Don’t you make the same mistake.

I’m with you, Lucas. Not a big fan of the holiday. I also don’t have any Halloween themed discs nor would I pay extra. I have noticed if you can resist the temptation infinite is usually selling last years (or 2022’s) Halloween discs at a discount. Orange is my favorite color so more likely to indulge for that reason than any of the gorey art. In fact when I bought my Z undertaker I specifically chose it because it was orange and didn’t have some stupid stamp on it.
Thank you, Kurt!
BTW, we’re on the same page with orange as a disc color …
It’s my favorite, too.
Totally underrated color, as I see it. Haha.
Your Halloween spirit will change when your kids get older. Lean into Halloween with them! Blast the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack around the house! Dress up with them! Prank them. Scare them. Have fun! But do not buy a disc for it’s stamp, that’s silly.
Oh, my wife and I lean into Halloween for them …
That much is for sure.
I hadn’t dressed up since college until last year.
The boys requested I be Jack Skellington (favorite movie of theirs), so I rolled with it.
That whole “This Is Halloween!” song is on repeat at our house 12 months a year …
I’m ready for something new. Haha.
(but in all seriousness, I’m cherishing these times – they’re fleeting)
It’s the greatest Halloween (and Christmas) movie ever. My kids were Sally and Jack the last 2 years. But hard rule, you can only watch/listen to it from October First thru December 24th.
Making Christmas is my banger on that. Kids love Kidnap Sandy Klaus.
I’m going to have to talk with the Mrs. about implementing a similar rule in our home …
It would help protect my sanity.
Thanks for the tip, Fletch!
(and we’re just about to October, so I know what sounds will be emanating from your home)
Haven’t been a big fan of Joel Freeman but after seeing that picture I kind of like him more. Showing up to a tournament in costume is freaking awesome. Jo mez or somebody should totally do a glow skins round with the pros all in costumes.
See, THAT I can understand …
The costumes on JomezPro or something like that.
Also, for what it’s worth, his wife – playing the part of his caddy that day – was dressed as a mime, as well.
So now you know 🙂
They totally should do it. I’m getting a whole thing here. Glomez Halloween skins. Calvin can be big bird, give eagle a cape and a little white face paint and he’s Dracula, Ricky can go in his T-Rex costume and Ganon can be frankenstein. They can win Candy along with money for the skins. It would be epic.
Playing for candy would be wholesome.
Also, anything that gets Rick back in that stupid T-rex costume is a “thumbs up” in my book.
Great idea, Joseph!
I’ve never much gotten into the purely decorative Halloween discs. I do get hyped (usually) for MVP’s Halloween line-up because I’m big into glow rounds come fall.
I’m probably in the minority in that I don’t care for the Pixel (flies great feels weird), but a glow Detour and Wave (presumably flippier than the glow Waves from 2022 OTB *fingers crossed*) get me hyped.
I also like that they made them signature series this year. Yes more expensive, but some of that goes to supporting a pro.
Let’s not forget the Fission Pyro either! I guess this is a long-winded way of saying, I can get behind Halloween special editions if they are truly special – i.e. different run of plastic that’s never been released. Versus overpriced pumpkin stamps or creepy full-color foils I’ll never throw.
I don’t personally love Halloween but it’s my wife’s favorite holiday, so I’m obligated to at least get a little excited about it.
Thanks for another insightful post!
Love the comment, David!
Lots of good detail to pick through …
That kind of thing is always welcomed on this blog 🙂
BTW, let me just come out and say the following …
The Axiom Pyro is a criminally underrated disc.
Not nearly enough people throw it.
Again, thanks for sharing – and happy Halloween!
Yeah I tend to geek out pretty hard when I put my thoughts to writing, especially involving disc golf.
I couldn’t agree more regarding the Pyro. I first picked one up about a year or so ago, when they put out the new run of Prism Neutron (I think it had been awhile since they’d manufactured any before that) and I fell in love immediately. I keep trying to turn my buddies onto it, but so far most of them haven’t taken to it… yet haha.
It was one of those situations where I didn’t realize I was missing that slot until I started throwing the Pyro and realized how frequently it comes in handy. I lean on it pretty heavily in the woods, but no matter the type of course I always find a spot to throw it at least once (usually several) times.
Hopefully between the two of us we can at least get a few more people bagging them, but it’s their loss! Very welcome, appreciate the great content. Have a happy Halloween yourself!
Great endorsement, David!
It might be time for a review of the disc on the site …
That might help, too.
I’ll have another post dropping later today.
Thanks for reading – and commenting.
I appreciate you, brotha!
I love Halloween and I’m truthfully a disc golf neophyte (Finishing out my first summer right now.)
I probably wouldn’t pay more than like $5 extra for a premium stamp, and I would also have to be interested in buying the disc already. But I will admit, I see some of these promotional stamps and get excited, not for gore or anything, I just like “Spooky” vibes. It’s fun to have discs where you like the stamp.
My local Disc golf store had last year’s Innova Star IT with the werewolf for the same price as any other disc, so I bought that as my first Fairway driver.
My issue is that as a Canadian Disc Golfer, Halloween discs come out at probably the least logical time for me to purchase any discs. We really can’t have much of a winter season up here when it gets to -40C. So even if I wanted to treat myself to one little vanity purchase of a cool disc with a ouija board stamp, it wouldn’t get used for 5 months. Now that would be a silly purchase.
But I’m all for people enjoying Halloween, especially if they want to dress up. Let’s not turn our nose up at good clean fun.
Nice, Kirk!
Dude, what do you do disc golf-wise during Canadian winters?
Are you getting out there at all or what?
Madness.
This is my first year, so I know the local league essentially stops playing regularly. But they mostly share that any chance they get (AKA Cold, but not super cold) to do a little bit of mini-golf / HORSE/ putting practice.
There’s talk of trying to find a way to do an indoor putting challenge if we can find the space.
Oh, you’ve got to get a putting league going …
BTW, if you need a space, I’d consider looking into church gyms.
I don’t know what the makeup of your group is like, but there’s a chance somebody has a key to one.
Granted, that setting all but eliminates the profanity and drinking and all of that jazz, but who needs it anyway, right?
Also, it’s (usually) free.
So there’s that 🙂
Putting league or bust!
Innova just released the color glow Gorgon 🎃for Halloween…
Must… resist…
As sure as night follows day …
I don’t think I’ll be able to resist… it’s champion plastic, Lucas! I’m sorry Star Gorgon… You’re still a star in my book! And of course they’re orange!
I tell you what… I’ll only buy one if my local brick n mortar gets them in. Not gonna pay for shipping, haha
Now THAT sounds like a plan …
I’ll allow it. Haha.
