Gripe No. 22: ‘Welcome to hole …’

Hole introductions …

That’s what I’m on about today.

YouTube is great for disc golf. Even as a guy who prefers the written word, I’m addicted to what the platform has to offer plastic junkies like myself. Swanky Disc Golf and Foundation Disc Golf are two of my favorites. Simon Lizotte’s content is must-see stuff. Paul McBeth does fun viddies with his Discraft teammates. And I’m just now (finally) getting into Robbie C’s channel, as well.

As a fellow content creator, I admire their work: I couldn’t do what they do. It’s vulnerable being in front of a camera, especially if you’re claiming to be an “expert” in the thing you’re doing. I’m also not tech-savvy enough for that jam – or even creative enough, for that matter.

I’ve got ONE beef with these YouTube peeps, though …

Every hole introduction starts the same way:

“Welcome to hole …”

For starters, if you’ve followed the channel for any amount of time, you know the hole. Most of these cats don’t have the bank balance to attack a new course every week. Still, I get the need for an explanation each time: You want to provide a positive experience for first-time viewers.

Really, my issue is twofold: First, going with “welcome” every single time makes it feel like you’re a cast member at Disneyland – talk about a letdown. And second, that “creativity” I mentioned earlier on? Over and over again, it takes a backseat – do something different.

I took about 15 seconds to come up with the following:

  • New No. 1 – “It’s time for …”
  • New No. 2 – “We’ve arrived at …”
  • New No. 3 – “Hole No. (#) is a real …”
  • New No. 4 – “Any idiot should be able to …”

Could I do a better job?

Absofruitly not.

That’s why I hide behind a keyboard.

But I know what uptight people find mildly annoying

This is one of those things.

  1. Excellent suggestion, Lucas…& although you’re “behind the keyboard “, you’ve found a great way to “put yourself” out there! Keep it coming!

Also, I, too, have a great hole preview suggestion, which your article reminded me of and totally stoked within me the desire to share with the main coverage creators (DGN, Jomez, Gateway, CCDG) – MORE TO F😀LL😃W!
