Disc golf: Resist the urge to overhaul your bag every off-season

Back in 2018, I noticed a disc golf buddy of mine selling all of his discs on Facebook

And I mean it: ALL of his discs.

You see this from time to time when a local, pandemic-era club member no longer cares about the sport. Or there’s an unexpected medical bill – something of the sort. Instead of discs collecting dust in a crawl space when fast cash is needed, there’s a Facebook fire sale.

But this guy was obsessed with disc golf – no way he was giving up on his go-to hobby. It’s when I read the fine print on one of his posts I discovered what was really going on …

Paul McBeth left Innova for Discraft

He was doing the same.

Only HE wasn’t being paid for it – he got to foot the bill.

Obviously, the reason this topic’s come up is Simon Lizotte’s recent departure from Discmania and signing with MVP Disc Sports. If you’re not yet up-to-speed on the deal, on top of a signing bonus, he’ll be full-blown GYRO for the next decade with a seven-figure annual salary …

It’s a monstrous deal.

And because of it, MVP, Axiom and Streamline will move mind-boggling amounts of plastic in the coming years. If you’re in a bad place with your bag, by all means, dive-in headfirst.

Seriously, affiliate commissions fund my writing …

Geaux hog-wild.

But if that’s NOT you, and you’re at all serious about a strong start to this upcoming season, don’t change what’s already working. Learning a bag is a real thing – it takes time.

On top of that, unless you’ve got a fat stack of gift cards at your disposal, buying new discs isn’t cheap. And with the meat of the 2023 disc golf season right around the corner, replacing your beat-to-perfection fliers with stock discs won’t be easy. My heart hurts when I see somebody voluntarily ditch what’s proven to work for disc golf’s “flavor of the week.”

Granted, if there’s a hole in your lineup, fill it …

MVP is a great place to start.

Here are four of my favorites – one for each disc type:

  • Putter – The MVP Nomad is James Conrad’s putter.
  • Midrange – The Axiom Pyro is a beadless, extra-glidey Gator
  • Fairway – The MVP Switch is a great beginner driver for newbies.
  • Distance – The Axiom Mayhem is (likely) to be Simon’s distance smasher.

* Note: In the utility slot, the Axiom Fireball is a flat-top Firebird, but on acid – it’s gravy.

It’s Lizotte today …

But next season, it’ll be Eagle McMahon. And after that, off-season after off-season, we’ll all sit back and watch manufacturers duke it out for the right to slap Gannon Buhr’s name on their gear.

Your knowledge of discs can’t keep up – neither can your bank account. Tinker with the stuff you see Simon hucking on his YouTube channel, but know that you don’t need it to succeed.

Your disc golf game (and marriage) will thank you.
