Disc golf: The 5 most entertaining FPO players

Paige Pierce and Catrina Allen.

Women who should occupy two of the top-five spots …

Right?

Eh, not so fast …

Pierce’s recent comments lead me to believe she’s more concerned with unicorns, rainbows and fuzzy feelings than winning disc golf tournaments. Which is weird, considering a documentary was just barely released about the tenacious, full-throttle nature of her competitive spirit.

And though oftentimes effective, Allen’s game is milquetoast. It works, because it’s boring. But just because it works, doesn’t change the fact that it’s void of flash – not great for this list.

Here are five ladies who DO pack a powerful entertainment punch:

5. Sarah Hokom

Everything’s a forehand.

But not just any forehand …

DGPT: Sarah Hokom

A forehand that looks like it’ll require immediate shoulder surgery. Sarah Hokom’s been a mainstay of the FPO field for a long time. I’ve watched her compete for years. And still, I’m pumped when I see her on lead-card coverage. Undoubtedly, there will be a hole that baits her into tossing a backhand. And undoubtedly, she’ll find a way to make the flick work for her …

She’s a wizard. And a thumpin’ good one.

4. Hailey King

Yes, Hailey King’s an underperformer …

But she’s the complete D.G. package:

  • Skill No. 1 – She can putt.
  • Skill No. 2 – She can forehand.
  • Skill No. 3 – She can backhand, too.

More than anything, she’s an athlete – it’s easy to see.

King’s innate ability makes her a fun watch. Also, though I don’t know her, she feels like one of the more awkward souls within the FPO division – I can’t help but pull for her to dominate.

3. Eveliina Salonen

This girls bombs.

Off the tee, in a good way.

And on the putting green, in a bad way.

DGPT: Eveliina Salonen

According to UDisc, Salonen’s first in fairway hits, placing the tee smack-dab in the middle of the good stuff 75% of the time. Conversely, she’s an abysmal 79th in C1X putting percentage, smashing chains at a 52% frequency. I’m a complete embarrassment to disc golf, and still

I hit at a higher clip.

For better or worse, Eveliina is must-see drama.

2. Ohn Scoggins

I love Ohn Scoggins.

Everything about her intrigues me:

  • Fact No. 1 – She’s old.
  • Fact No. 2 – She rocks braces.
  • Fact No. 3 – She flexes forehands.
  • Fact No. 4 – She flutter-putts like mad.

But here’s the REAL brilliance of Scoggins …

She’s relatable.

There aren’t many professional golfers who don’t drop jaws off the tee – Ohn is one of ‘em. But in spite of nabbing only 325-ish feet on a max-distance drive, she puts the fear of God in peeps far younger than her with smart play and reliable putting – she works with what she’s got.

It’s inspiring.

1. Kristin Tattar

Kristin Tattar is a freak.

I’m not going to accelerate the hand arthritis that’s heading my way to drone on about the genius of her game. I will, however, tell you the sole reason she’s EASILY first on this list, though …

Her putting is unreal.

DGPT: Kristin Tattar

I can’t watch enough of it …

I’m not certain she couldn’t hold her own against Paul McBeth, Ricky Wysocki and Eagle McMahon in a hypothetical, circle-two putting contest – she’s THAT good from the straddle.

Her putt’s crisp, clean and effortless.

* Honorable Mention: Ella Hansen throws far, but hardly looks like she’s trying – it’s dope.

Sorry, Paige and Catrina …

Any other year, yes – but not this time around.

Maybe next season.

  1. Kat Mertsch gets my nod to add to the list for her lighter mood and oneness with the natures. She’s always finding a critter and freaking the rest of her card out. Plus she is quickly climbing the ranks, need to see more Kat.

      • Explain bubble talent. Are you saying she got good during the pandemic era? She just shot the hot round of the fpo year at the Oklahoma Open. In the wind. That’s not accidental good. Wind doesn’t make you accidentally good.

        • No, “bubble talent” refers to being on the precipice of a genuine threat to take down tournaments in the FPO division.

It doesn’t reference the COVID-19 “bubble.”

Like, she’s not yet an elite FPO athlete: Kristin, Paige, Catrina, etc.

She’s a “bubble talent,” in that she’s “on the bubble.”

Close, but not yet there – but one day (and probably pretty soon), she will be.

  2. You mentioned that you are not certain that Tattar could not hold her end up in a hypothetical c2 challenge. Paul’s putting could be considered off, but he is still hitting c2s at 31%. Tattar is hitting 13% of hers. Not quite sure what the comparison is there. Also an honorable mention there is that while Gannon is at a pretty much career high at 40%, Reid Frescura was 66%, which is absolutely insane! Imagine stepping up to your putts with that kind of confidence!
