Disc golf: The 5 most entertaining MPO players

Before anybody blows a gasket, let’s make sure we’re on the same page …

This post deals with MPO entertainment valueNOT talent.

Also, this is housed under the “takes” section of the site for a reason – it’s subjective. So, should you feel insulted by a name that’s been left off the list, unbundle those undies of yours, pop a couple chill pills and pen a post of your own to set the record straight – I’ll publish it.

Otherwise, accept the following as gospel:

5. Nathan Queen

I get a kick out of watching the following:

  • Fun No. 1 – Guys who throw left-handed.
  • Fun No. 2 – Guys who don’t have a sidearm.

Southpaws see a course differently. Watching them not only battle the competition, but course designers is must-see stuff. Obviously, the best way to combat this is a power sidearmChris Clemons, for example. Nathan Queen’s a lefty. And his flick is literally non-existent …

And he STILL shreds.

DGPT: Nathan Queen

Apparently, half-a-million molds get the job done …

Flippy or bust.

4. Nikko Locastro

Every sport needs a villain

Ours is Nikko Locastro.

Even during the latter-half of his career, you paid $50 to see if Mike Tyson would remove an opponent’s body part with his teeth – at least once, you were spot-on. No, Locastro’s not going Hannibal Lecter on a cardmate anytime soon, but there’s a train-wreck in that skull of his …

Don’t miss the sparks.

On a more serious note, though, I love Locastro’s flex-heavy game. Nobody leans on overstable plastic quite like he does. Usually, you associate beefy frisbees with powerful arms. But while Nikko’s no slouch in the distance department, he uses them with polished poise, precision …

And profanity.

3. Gregg Barsby

I once wrote about why you should become a “Barsbarian.”

The dude was ALWAYS going to show up on this list.

Again, à la Queen and Locastro, I’m a sucker for dudes who do disc golf different. Barsby bypasses throwing putters and midranges for tossing Eagles for virtually anything and everything. And while you might not think that’s enough to earn him a mention …

He owns the three-point putt.

DGPT: Gregg Barsby

Peeps who couldn’t care less about the NBA tune in to see Steph Curry drain buckets from the moon. And while professional disc golf’s not (yet) at that stage, more than any other disc golfer I’ve ever covered, Gregg scares the heck out of baskets from deep – they all seem to go in.

Also, Sirius Scorpius

Nuff said.

2. Ricky Wysocki

There’s not a tournament Ricky Wysocki enters he doesn’t think he can win. And even when he doesn’t win, he’s convinced he was the best guy out there. Because of it, he plays angry. And the good kind of angry – not the kind that has him pouting when things don’t go his way …

I respect that.

And yeah, he might make weird claims about how Worlds should be decided …

But I’ll let that slide.

The Wysocki name speaks for itself – you don’t need me to elaborate. More than anything, in-person, I once saw Raptor Legs throw a 350-foot sidearm from a standstill. It was the single-most impressive thing I’ve ever seen on a disc golf course – nothing will ever top it.

1. Paul McBeth

I was too stupid (and young) to appreciate Michael Jordan.

I’m not making the same mistake with Paul McBeth.

DGPT: Paul McBeth

Don’t be dumb: McBeth’s the best to have ever picked up a discand you know it. His clutch gene is the stuff of urban legends – he’s NEVER out of an event. And even when he is, course records are soon to be claimed. The guy had a down year and still won his sixth World Title

Let that sink in.

* Honorable Mention: Simon Lizotte didn’t make the cut, as he now plays safer – and wins.

Give me a card with ANY iteration of the above …

I’ll be pleased as peaches.

    • It’s to bait people on social media into flying off the radar without actually reading the article …

It works every time 50% of the time.
