Luke Humphries has called a few places home: Wichita, Kan., Hot Springs, Ark. and even Dallas, Texas. Where Luke currently resides is on top of the DGPT Points Standings.
Was that last part surprising?
It’s okay to admit it – no judgment here.
Now let me ask you this: Why are you surprised? Did you not take Luke seriously until now?
Most know Humphries as the guy with a curly mustache, a pair of Vans for every occasion and a loyal dog with his own Instagram account, but did you know he’s also a talented disc golfer?
Luke Humphries doing a reverse career
— Obi Bogey (@BogeyObi) March 12, 2022
While I got a quick laugh out of Obi Bogey, his tweet had me doing some digging on my end. For just a second, put aside the obvious “drip” and skins work Humphries does with GK Pro …
You already know all of that jazz, anyway.
From the man himself, though, here’s what you might not know about the dude:
- Luke was straight-up kicked out of Kansas State – twice.
- Luke started with ball golf, but switched to disc golf to be with Hogan.
- Luke won the PDGA’s Rookie of the Year award three years back in 2019.
Buckle up, folks – this last bullet might come as a bit of a shock …
- In 2018, Luke played in six sanctioned events as an MA1 disc golfer – his worst finish was second. He came in second at the Texas Amateur Championships and PDGA United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship. Everything else? Four first-place finishes, including a “casual” win at the PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships …
He won by 14 strokes.
Not bad for a guy you thought only interviewed “actual” disc golfers for a living, eh?
Coming off of his Rookie of the Year-winning season in 2019, 2020 was to be the year Luke established himself as a strong professional – the universe would have other plans, though …
Enter COVID-19, stage left.
After finishing in 42nd place at WACO, along with the rest of the planet, the disc golf world shut down. When Arkansas opened it back up, Humphries saw an opportunity. He knew the owner of Persimmon Ridge DGC, so he got some buddies together for the first OTB Tour Skins match.
From there, Luke’s disc golf career was known more for his work as a host and podcaster than his own abilities – up to that point, his best finish was 10th at the 2021 Portland Open …
To start 2022, however, Luke would make a SEISMIC change:
Was this a symbolic gesture of sorts? A nod to the future of his close-to-winning ways, perhaps? Whatever the case, it worked – week in and week out, the guy’s a threat to take down tourneys.
There’s more to learn from this for you and me than simply shaving a mustache, though:
- Lesson No. 1 – Play at your own pace. In due time, success will come.
- Lesson No. 2 – Disc golf is about having fun – way too many people forget this.
In Luke’s press conference before WACO, he said that Brazos Park East was his second least- favorite course. He then followed that up with a smile, saying, “I’m going to continue to aim at stuff and throw frisbees at it.” Instantly this became my favorite way to describe disc golf …
How could anyone that relaxed be unsuccessful at something so fun?
We’ll continue to RT this until it’s common disc golf knowledge. https://t.co/3oqt58u70s

So, I’ll ask you again …
Now that we all know Luke slightly better, are you still surprised by the man?
The above Instagram post where Humphries shaves off his upper-lip bristles is entitled, “Big News Part 1.” There never was a “Big News Part 2.” I guess we’re all kind of waiting for it. After the start he’s had to the season, I couldn’t be more excited to see what it entails …
Whatever it is, it’ll be big – stay tuned.
